Washington Square-en stålferget bilferge bygget i 1931 i Brooklyn, NY, av Todd Drydock Engineering Repair Corp.-ble anskaffet av marinen fra New York City Department of Marine and Aviation 17. august 1942, omdøpt til Staten (YFB -36); og ble tatt i bruk 9. oktober 1942.
